INTERVENTION– “Kiss Sound”
Inspired by my tutor Cecilia and the book sense hacking, I imagined that a deaf person’s lack of auditory senses would be enhanced by the experience of another sense. After completing a series of interviews and participatory research with Deaf and hearing people, I analysed the feedback from the research. I used discursive design to create a scene-reducing narrative association with problems encountered by Deaf people in their daily lives, and transformed the Deaf voice fragments in the narrative dialogue into visual flat acoustic graphics, which were then transformed into a 3D model using 3D modelling software, and printed into a finished sculpture in CSM’s workshop.

I used this 3D sculpture for three days of testing on CSM’s campus, in public and indoor spaces, and in an outdoor park. In the process, I asked people to guess what the model was, then used sound to explain and illustrate, and finally asked the audience to leave feedback and suggestions.

The use of 3D skill plus sound and virtual interaction into the physical artwork, the combination of physical and virtual, made into a public art exhibition or facilities, to create a physical + digital immersive gallery experience. For the deaf, the visualization of sound increases their participation in public art exhibitions, and the visualization of physical objects is no longer unfamiliar and distant from auditory expression. For the public, this artefact is an immersive visual and auditory experience, allowing them to hear the voices of the Deaf community, to see digital visual expressions, and to understand the barriers to the lives of social minorities.

SELF-REFLECTION
But from a visual and spatial point of view, exhibitions cannot last forever. In the book Critical Design (Dunne, A.2008) is mentioned: Critical Design uses speculative design proposals to challenge narrow assumptions, preconception and givens about the role products play in everyday life. From a more pragmatic point of view for Deaf people, I decided to create a problem-solving and experience-sharing at the centre online website, which would encompass Deafness prevention, guidance on government welfare policies, employment, healthcare, arts and sign language teaching. This platform-based communication helps them to surf the web like a normal person. And informative expression on this platform will help these deaf people to get information faster. Not only does it help empower them psychologically, but it also has a real impact on their lives.
